Today Santorini is visited by some 2.5 million people every year. They are drawn by the spectacular beauty of this island, whose ringed inner coast, with its sheer cliffs, was formed by the collapse of an immense volcano. Though tourism is Santorini's main industry now, for centuries the island was home to a distinctive farming and seafaring culture that had mastered the art of survival under the most adverse conditions.
This bygone culture -and the rugged landscape that sustained it- come back to life in the photographs of Robert A. McCabe, who traveled to Santorini repeatedly between 1954 and 1964; on his first visit, he and his brother were the only foreign visitors on the island. McCabe's images -reproduced here as full-page tritones- record a donkey ride up the steep path to the main settlement of Fira; the harvest of Santorini's famous cherry tomatoes; a village baptism; an excursion to the archaeological site of Ancient Thera; and many other scenes of island life. They also document the start of the redevelopment of Santorini in the wake of the devastating earthquake of 1956, an effort that set the island on the path to becoming the tourist destination it is today.
Essays by Margarita Pournara, a leading Greek journalist, lend a deeper understanding of life on Santorini then and now. Pournara recalls the customs and sayings she learned from her grandmother Zarifoula Makellaraki, a native of Santorini; interviews Paraskevi Nomikou, a young geologist from Santorini, about the volcanic and seismic forces that shaped the island; and visits the unique vineyards -now threatened by development- that produce Santorini's famous Assyrtiko wine.
This handsome volume -a companion to McCabe's recent book on Mykonos- is a vital celebration of Santorini's heritage, and a fascinating souvenir for present-day visitors to the island.
